Latest news for SWBT

SWBT’s funds are very limited and the grants we are able to give are for a few hundreds. We are never able to afford to give thousands. The number of social workers applying for grants has grown so much that this also prevents us giving large sums as the monies need to be shared across the applicants.

In our last financial year, October 2023 – September 2024, we had 381 applicants. Of these

  • 77% were successful
  • 66% were first time applicants
  • 73% were in employment
  • 92% were female
  • 71% were aged between 30 and 49
  • 77% of grants were to cover household expenses or debts
  • most grants we give now are for £350, although we can be flexible depending on circumstances
  • in recent years we have noticed an increase in the number of applicants who have suffered domestic abuse

Charity delivering beds to children

We have noted a number of applicants are applying for beds usually because their beds or their children’s beds are broken. We are therefore giving information about charities that give beds.

Looking on Google for charity beds there are a number of charities who will support those in need of beds in particular beds for children. See examples below:

Zarach: is a charity committed to helping children and families who are living in poverty crisis,  delivering beds and basics to children. Started by a Deputy Head Teacher at an inner-city Primary School in Leeds the charity has recently expanded to cover Romford.

Birmingham Bed Poverty: Working across the City of Birmingham, the service will provide beds, bedding, and other essentials for safe sleeping to children identified via Education.
